The James Hutton Institute

I am Postdoctoral Researcher at the James Hutton Institute.

My research interests are:

- Carbon and nutrient cycling from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems to the atmosphere
- Role of land-use change, hydrometeorological extremes on carbon and nutrient cycling
- Composition, reactivity, and fate of dissolved organic matter in freshwater and terrestrial environments

Carol had a BSc Science degree from Aberdeen University. Her research interests are Environmental Change Network: Use of long-term monitoring sites and historical re-sampling strategies in the detection of environmental changes (ECN) and Hydrology and Stream Morphology.

Nikki's background is in soil hydrology and terrain analysis. Prior to joining the Institute Nikki had three years experience working on the European agricultural modelling project: STAMINA.

Nikki's current research is focused on soil hydrology and its linkage to water quality, quantity and Green House Gas emissions. She is involved in modelling soil erosion at national and catchment scales using Pan European Soil Risk Assessment model, PESERA. She is interested in developing links between soil hydrology and the transport of chemicals and particulate matter both in fragile upland environments and lowland agricultural systems.

She is also interested how the spatial distribution or soils can be linked to national level assessments of soil as a provider of ecosystem goods and services.

Helen completed her academic study at the University of Aberdeen and then began her career at the Institute in 1998. She is an experienced technical assistant with both field and laboratory based skills.

She is responsible for mentoring and coordinating technical staff, their skills and the available resources to support research scientists and their associated projects with the catchment management group.

I am a Field and Laboratory Assistant at The James Hutton Institute, holding a BSc 1st class Marine Biology Graduate from Heriot-Watt University. I am passionate about marine life and its protection. I find myself extremely interested in the conservation of our marine world and our planet.

Allan is a soil scientist with particular interest in hydropedology. He has a background in soil survey, biophysical resource analysis and land evaluation and has been responsible for both systematic soil survey and land evaluation at a national level and contract soil surveys at detailed scales.

My research develops and applies knowledge and tools for improving delivery of integrated catchment management across issues of water quality, flooding, resource use efficiency and water-energy links. My remit includes the lead of the Scottish Government five-year programme on Water and Renewable Energy. My background as a catchment biogeochemist gives an understanding across disciplines of hydrology, chemistry and ecosystems and I specialise in environmental pollution, especially relating to nutrient management.

Zisis is an interdisciplinary researcher with >15 years’ experience in land, soil and water resources research and geospatial analysis. He has experience in developing approaches for modelling the spatial distribution of soils and other environmental properties and functions using advanced statistical and geospatial data analysis techniques. His work focuses on integrating soils and other biophysical data within existing and new applications and frameworks for ecosystem services provision, land management and evaluation, and diffuse pollution and flooding mitigation.

I am an environmental modeller with a research focus on land and soil systems. I am particularly interested in the challenge of meeting multiple societal demands across food, water, climate and biodiversity whilst managing the long-term sustainability of these systems.

Victoria Janes-Bassett

Lancaster Environment Centre

I am a post-doctoral researcher at Lancaster Environment Centre.

My research to date has focused on the role of, and interactions between free-living nematodes, plants, and bacteria in the soil biogeochemical phosphorus cycle. I utilise cross- and inter-disciplinary materials and methodologies to develop understanding of the soil biogeochemical system with a critical approach. I am interested in elucidating the effect of historical legacies (>150 yrs) on soil systems and how this informs responses to biotic and abiotic perturbations along a grand temporal continuum, with full integration of the human, as a geological and ecological agent.

I am an engineer and environmental scientist interested in the role of land and soils in creating sustainable food, climate and water futures. I work across a wide range of settings: from forests and peatlands, arable lands and grazed grasslands, to urban landscapes, and employ a wide range of methods in my work: from quantitiative process-based modelling and geospatial analysis to qualitative expert elicitation and citizens juries.

Professor Phil Haygarth conducts research on the interface between soils and freshwaters, with a focus on diffuse (particularly phosphorus) pollution and runoff control in a catchment context. His research studies the way in which soils can be encouraged to hold phosphorus at an optimal level to supply plants for food production, whist defining conditions that prevent the unwanted leakage to fresh-waterways. The practical impact of his research has been to help the UK government, and others around the world, develop policies that help farmers and catchment managers optimize plant uptake of phosphorus but minimize losses to water. Often this involves efforts to reduce runoff energy, which can have dual benefits for both diffuse pollution and flood control.

Anna is a Postdoctoral Reasearcher at CEAB-CSIC.

Her research aims to understand how the natural and anthropogenic transfer of matter from lands affect the role of freshwaters in global biogeochemical cycles.

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

My research is primarily directed towards understanding how land-use and climate is influencing water quality at a landscape perspective.

I am the scientific director for the Krycklan catchment study and also head of department of forest ecology and management.

Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research

Andreas is working in the department for Hydrogeology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research.

Andreas work is focused on modell- and data-driven approaches to water quality and quantity on catchment scale, concentration-discharge relationships and travel time of water in catchments
